The 27th Annual Golden Joystick Awards were held recently and the Call of Duty series managed to walk away with another handful of honors.
Call of Duty: World at War was hailed as “Multiplayer Game of the Year” and “Nintendo Game of the Year.”
In what seems like stating the obvious, (more…)

The game that many of us have been waiting patiently for, Wolfenstein, will finally hit retail outlets this week. Although many have grown tired of games inspired by World War Two, it seems that there is still a place for a sci-fi Nazi slaying fest in today’s market. Hopefully the game ends up being worth the wait when it launches tomorrow for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
Also available this week is Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger (PC, Xbox 360), a hybrid of first person shooting and real time strategizing. The slick graphics and shooting elements seem appealing, however RTS games have never been up my alley and I’m not sure how well the two gameplay styles will blend. It’s a safe assumption that most will be more intrigued by, and occupied with Wolfenstein, at least for this week.
In addition to Wolfenstein and Raven Squad, for those who may be in the mood for some classic side-scrolling action, for 1200 Microsoft Points or $15, you can grab Shadow Complex via Xbox Live Arcade this week as well.
Although the past couple of weeks have been a bit dry, things seems to be picking up at this point.

GameTrailers.com has put together a video tribute on the classic N64 FPS, GoldenEye 007. It could be argued that GoldenEye catalyzed the popularizing of console first person shooters, while the addicting multiplayer modes were extremely influential.
The video offers a variety of facts about the game that you’re likely already aware of, but the trip down memory lane courtesy of the clips and music playing in the background is worthwhile. Considering the game’s age and the significant strides that have been made in the genre over the years, it still holds up fairly well.

When it comes to opinions on the artistic style of Gears of War, there seems to be no middle ground. Gamers tend to either love or hate the series’ gritty, desaturated appearance. Fans of this visual approach believe that it helps create an appropriate atmosphere for the grim, war-torn world presented. Others aren’t fond of the art style at all. They suggest that Gears of War games appear too dull and would prefer a more vibrantly colored universe – in other words, there’s too much brown and gray.
Changes to the artistic style of the series may be afoot, however. The creative force behind the games, Cliff Bleszinski, recently stated the following in an interview with Develop Online: (more…)

While the recently released box art for Modern Warfare 2 isn’t the final design, a number of people have expressed their discontentment with its appearance.
Personally, I don’t mind the temporary box art. But I felt that in the case of Modern Warfare 2, all that’s needed, really, is a black background with the logo prominently displayed.
I threw something together based on that concept – you can take a look at it here. An Xbox 360 cover was used, but it wasn’t selected with the intention of slighting other platforms.
Now, anyone with some basic photo editing abilities could do this – I’m certainly not trying to pass this off as a skillfully crafted work of art.
Still, I think it would be a clean, effective cover that allows the name to speak for itself. (more…)

Here is a look at a few games that I’d like to see sequels for. Keep in mind that to prevent the article from being too lengthy, games where sequels may be inevitable weren’t taken into consideration. (more…)

The gaming world is gearing up for this week’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, which is arguably one of the most exciting times of the year in this industry. Many games will be showcased and as with past shows, there are likely a few surprises in store as well.
A wide array of first and third person shooters have been confirmed to appear at this year’s event. Here is a look at some of the ones that we’re interested in getting a glimpse at the most:
Halo 3: ODST – Developed by Bungie: X360
This open world expansion to Halo 3 centers on the struggles of an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper in the city of New Mombasa after he has been separated from his squad. ODST precedes the events of Halo 3 and players will supposedly need to utilize a more tactical approach than what was typically required with past Halo games.
Aside from the few available tidbits of information, Bungie has kept a fairly tight seal on ODST thus far. It will be interesting to learn more about what it has to offer at E3. (more…)

As the industry prepares for E3, information is beginning to surface regarding what we can expect to see at this year’s show.
In a recent press statement, Activision unveiled a listing of games that they plan to showcase during the highly anticipated event. Mike Griffith of Activision Publishing states: “At this year’s E3, we will debut the largest and strongest lineup in our company’s history.”
Included in this lineup are the following FPS games, as detailed in Activision’s press release: (more…)
Summer is just around the corner. Soon we’ll be able to take advantage of the warm weather and get back to swimming, using the barbecue, relaxing on the beach, going for bike rides – or doing whatever your favorite summer activities may be.

It’s always a refreshing change to be able to return to some outdoor activities when the warm weather arrives. Although, another favorite summer pastime of mine is to stay inside with the A/C cranked to log in some significant gaming time.
With that in mind, here is a look at some of recently released and upcoming shooters that can keep you occupied when you’ll need those inevitable breaks from the smoldering summer heat. (more…)
