B.J. Blazkowicz has returned to take on legions of Nazis in this first person shooter developed primarily by Raven Software. The Nazis have been experimenting with a force known as The Black Sun, which will make their army unstoppable when mastered. It’s up to Blazkowicz to put an end to their research and prevent them from unleashing total hell. This may sound like an impossible task for one man, but he’ll have some help courtesy of a medallion that allows him to utilize a variety of abilities by tapping into The Veil – a realm that connects our world to The Black Sun’s energy.
While the powers at your disposal in Wolfenstein will seem familiar, they can be very useful and entertaining to use. After discovering the aforementioned medallion at a Nazi excavation site, you’ll acquire the Veil Sight ability, the first of four powers you can use in the game (more will be unlocked as you progress). Veil Sight can be described as a sci-fi adaptation of night vision, as the world becomes encompassed in a green tint and enemies will glow. Hidden passageways will also be revealed while using Veil Sight, and creatures known as Gheists become visible as well. (more…)

Award-winning musician Jason Graves has created an original score for TimeGate Studios’ futuristic FPS, Section 8. Graves is known for his musical contributions to Dead Space, last year’s hit third person survival horror game, and the Star Trek franchise.
To create a proper ambiance for Section 8, Graves has blended vintage synth and guitar elements with orchestral components.
“Section 8 was a great opportunity to combine my three musical passions: orchestra, electronics/synths and guitars,” said Graves. “It was so much fun playing guitar and tweaking my analog synths. I treated them as additional members of the orchestra, sometimes taking the spotlight and other times adding textural background.”
Those who have been anticipating Section 8 will be able to drop in the battlefield shortly, as the game’s release is just around the corner (September 1).
Activision Publishing has confirmed that Cabela’s Big Game Hunter 2010 will be released in North America on September 29 for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii.
“We are elevating the first person action hunting genre because it’s what fans demand. Skill, extreme danger, real world equipment – you get all of that in Cabela’s Big Game Hunter 2010, and it all takes place in stunningly rendered outdoor environments packed with animals that look and act like the real thing.”
-David Oxford, Activision Publishing
Adding to the realism is the Top Shot hunting peripheral, which can be purchased with the Wii version of the game. Wii owners will also enjoy 13 arcade shooting galleries, including 4-person multiplayer.

The game that many of us have been waiting patiently for, Wolfenstein, will finally hit retail outlets this week. Although many have grown tired of games inspired by World War Two, it seems that there is still a place for a sci-fi Nazi slaying fest in today’s market. Hopefully the game ends up being worth the wait when it launches tomorrow for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
Also available this week is Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger (PC, Xbox 360), a hybrid of first person shooting and real time strategizing. The slick graphics and shooting elements seem appealing, however RTS games have never been up my alley and I’m not sure how well the two gameplay styles will blend. It’s a safe assumption that most will be more intrigued by, and occupied with Wolfenstein, at least for this week.
In addition to Wolfenstein and Raven Squad, for those who may be in the mood for some classic side-scrolling action, for 1200 Microsoft Points or $15, you can grab Shadow Complex via Xbox Live Arcade this week as well.
Although the past couple of weeks have been a bit dry, things seems to be picking up at this point.
You have a brand new game that you can’t seem to tear yourself away from and you were having an absolute blast… until you became stuck on a frustrating boss battle that’s preventing you from moving on to the next level or completing the campaign. It’s driving you insane and you want to break your controller in half, but damn it, you’re not putting it down until you finally get past the bugger, even if takes you all night.
We’ve all been there. Here are two examples of irritating boss battles I have encountered during this generation; ones that really stick out in my mind where the controller nearly wound up going through my television screen. (more…)
If you were on the fence about whether Wolfenstein would be worth your time or not, hopefully this video has convinced you to take the plunge when it arrives on the 18th.
It looks amazing. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar and a cheat. Well, maybe not a cheat…
