The gaming world is gearing up for this week’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, which is arguably one of the most exciting times of the year in this industry. Many games will be showcased and as with past shows, there are likely a few surprises in store as well.
A wide array of first and third person shooters have been confirmed to appear at this year’s event. Here is a look at some of the ones that we’re interested in getting a glimpse at the most:
Halo 3: ODST – Developed by Bungie: X360
This open world expansion to Halo 3 centers on the struggles of an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper in the city of New Mombasa after he has been separated from his squad. ODST precedes the events of Halo 3 and players will supposedly need to utilize a more tactical approach than what was typically required with past Halo games.
Aside from the few available tidbits of information, Bungie has kept a fairly tight seal on ODST thus far. It will be interesting to learn more about what it has to offer at E3. (more…)
In addition to the Wake Island, Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima maps, EA and DICE announced this morning that players will be able to unlock a fourth map, called Coral Sea: (more…)

As the industry prepares for E3, information is beginning to surface regarding what we can expect to see at this year’s show.
In a recent press statement, Activision unveiled a listing of games that they plan to showcase during the highly anticipated event. Mike Griffith of Activision Publishing states: “At this year’s E3, we will debut the largest and strongest lineup in our company’s history.”
Included in this lineup are the following FPS games, as detailed in Activision’s press release: (more…)
We’ve been wondering what Kaos Studios, the crew behind Frontlines: Fuel of War, have been up to for a while now.
The speculation has ended, as today they’ve announced that a new FPS title called Homefront is in the works, and it will arrive on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC.
The game is set during the not-so-distant future in a North Korean-occupied United States.
The crew behind the upcoming sci-fi game, Dark Void, have shed some light on its plot and basic play mechanics in this recently released ‘Developer Diary’ video:
One thing is clear from watching this footage: Dark Void appears to offer some unique, innovative gameplay – but solid, intuitive controls will be an absolute must. Without them, the vertical cover system and aerial elements could be disastrous.
However, assuming the folks at Airtight Games will be able to implement a control system that’s reflective of their company name, Dark Void could provide a fairly invigorating experience for fans of shooters and action games.
Dark Void is coming to the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC, although there’s no official release date in sight yet.
Conceptually, you would think that a video game based on the venerable Terminator franchise that’s format was heavily influenced by Gears of War could be an instant classic. However, with Terminator Salvation, this assumption couldn’t be more incorrect. Regrettably, it falls short on many levels, and at best could be described as a Gears of War knockoff that substitutes humanity’s struggle against the cunning and intimidating Locust Horde with a war against dreary, monotonous machines. Summer is just around the corner. Soon we’ll be able to take advantage of the warm weather and get back to swimming, using the barbecue, relaxing on the beach, going for bike rides – or doing whatever your favorite summer activities may be.
It’s always a refreshing change to be able to return to some outdoor activities when the warm weather arrives. Although, another favorite summer pastime of mine is to stay inside with the A/C cranked to log in some significant gaming time.
With that in mind, here is a look at some of recently released and upcoming shooters that can keep you occupied when you’ll need those inevitable breaks from the smoldering summer heat. (more…)

Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger is an upcoming tactical action game being developed by Atomic Motion for the Xbox 360 and PC that blends traditional FPS gameplay with RTS elements. The game takes place in the Amazonian jungle and you’ll need to solve each situation by using a combination of the two genres – alone, or cooperatively with a friend.
Obviously, I enjoy shooters, though I’m generally not fond of RTS games. However, Raven Squad may be an appealing hybrid title for fans of both genres, depending on how things turn out.
Raven Squad’s official release date has not been confirmed yet, but it should be available sometime in 2009 and will supposedly be playable at this year’s E3. The following screenshots released today by the game’s publisher, SouthPeak Interactive, will have to tide you over in the meantime: (more…)

Steam is offering a promotion where you will receive a free copy of Second Sight right away if you pre-purchase Damnation, the upcoming action shooter.
For those who are unfamiliar with Second Sight, it’s a 2005 stealth action game that was developed by Free Radical Design (now Crytek UK). Free Radical was, of course, best known for their TimeSplitters games.
Sounds like a fairly decent offer. Head over to the Steam website if you’re interested in taking advantage of it.
